Antique Ivory Madras Work Letter Opener * English * Circa 1820
This unusual letter opener is hand carved of ivory and has a nice old patina and grain pattern. The handle has been engraved with fine Madras work circles and dots. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. There is a fine age crack where the blade is riveted to the handle but the overall condition is excellent and sturdy with no other damage. It measures 7 1/8" long. A collection of sewing tools in Madras work are shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

Antique Brass Beer Stein Tape Measure & Thimble Holder
This nice antique tape measure is made of brass in the form of a decorative beer stein with raised figures around the sides. The tape is in the bottom and the top flips open to hold a thimble. The woven tape is marked in both centimeters and inches. It is original and complete. It winds back in when the bottom is turned and it works perfectly. The woven tape is marked "LONDON" and "Made in Austria". The stein measures 1 7/8" high and the base is almost 1" in diameter. In the top is a lovely silver thimble from Germany. The top of this luminous Victorian spool holder is carved of mother of pearl. It has a flower design on the top surrounded by a wide engine turned border. The center is set with a turquoise cabochon. Both the top and bottom unscrew to allow a ball of thread to be slipped on. The bottom and center post are made of bone. The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. It measures 1 3/8" high by 1 1/4" in diameter and was once part of an English workbox. Some reels of this type are shown on p. 161 of Gay Ann Rogers' book "An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools" and the style of workbox they would be from is shown on p. 36....

The top of this early Victorian thread waxer is made of mother of pearl in the form of a flower with pierced scalloped edges. The bottom is turned bone. Some nacre layers in the center have a little separation but the overall condition is excellent and it still has the original wax. The mother of pearl is very luminous and it unscrews so the wax could be changed. It measures almost 1" high and the top is 1" in diameter. It was once part of an English workbox set of tools. Some similar waxers are shown on p. 136 of Gay Ann Rogers' book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tool and she shows the style of workbox it would have been part of...

This antique cotton or thread barrel is carved of real ivory with smooth sides and turned bands. The top unscrews from the barrel and inside is a spindle to be wrapped with thread. There's a hole in the side to feed the thread through. Aside from a short hairline crack at the bottom edge, the condition is excellent with no chips or loss and everything screws together perfectly. The patina and ivory grain are nice and it's all original. It would have graced an English workbox of the late 18th or early 19th century. It measures 1 3/4" high by 1" in diameter. Antique English Sheathed Ivory Stiletto / Awl * C1820
This style of stiletto was very popular in the early 19th century when delicate silk bags were used to store needlework projects and tools. The handle also serves as a sheath to protect the point. It unscrews, reverses, and then screws back into the handle for use. The ivory has turned carving and everything screws together perfectly. Aside from a U shaped surface hairline crack, it's in excellent condition with no chips, loss or other damage. It measures 2 1/8" long closed and 2 5/8" open and was bought in England. It has a very nice ivory grain pattern....
