Antique Carved Ivory Workbox Thread Barrel * C1820
This elegant antique cotton or thread barrel is carved of ivory and has a beautiful old patina and grain pattern. It has smooth sides and turned bands. The top unscrews from the barrel and inside is a little spool which was to be wrapped with thread. There's a hole in the side to feed the thread through and the spindle on top winds in the thread. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. You have to fiddle with the top though to get the screw threads going right. These elegant little antique cotton barrels are smoothly carved of real ivory. The thread was wound around the spools inside and there's a hole in the side of each to feed the thread through. They were part of an English Regency workbox from the early 19th century. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. The spots you see at the center of the bottom are natural ivory imperfections. Each measures 1 5/8" high and almost 1" in diameter. Some are shown on p. 44 of Nerylla Taunton's "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries" along with the style of workbox they are from....

These elegant antique cotton barrels are smoothly carved of real ivory. The thread was wound around the spools inside and there's a hole in the side of each to feed the thread through. The flat knobs on top wind the thread back in and are quite unusual in shape. Both are wrapped with fine silk thread. They were part of an English Regency workbox from the early 19th century. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. Each measures 1 3/4" high and 1" in diameter. Antique Ivory Fretwork Souvenir Needle Book * C1820
This little antique needle book is carved of real ivory and is lined with the original red silk. It's carved and decorated on both sides with delicate pierced designs. The front has a circular panel that says "A Present from Isle Wight". Inside are 4 finely twilled wool flannel "pages" for the needles, with hand stitched silk twist around the edges. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and it's entirely original. It measures 2" by 1 1/2" (closed) and the ivory patina and grain pattern are lovely. Antique Carved Ivory Dieppe Emery Cushion * C1820
This gorgeous little double ended emery cushion is beautifully carved around the middle with a grape and grapevine design. It has a nice old patina and ivory grain pattern and was carved by the skilled artisans of Dieppe, France in the early 19th century. Emeries were used to sharpen and polish the steel needles of the age. Emery powder is a fine grit and the needles were pushed in and out the cushion several times. It also removed rust. Antique Ivory Figural Lady's Leg Pen Knife * C1870
This little piece is a gem. It's a folding pen knife carved in the form of a lady's leg with carved details for her toes. A knife like this is shown on p. 29 of the Shire book "Penknives and Other Folding Knives" by Simon Moore. He says that it was said to be modeled on Lady Ilchester's leg and dates to c. 1870. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. The little blade is sharp and closes nicely with a snap. It is stamped "William Newbould Celebrated" on one side and "Plenty" with a sythe on the other. It measures a petite 2 1/2" long closed and 3 3/4" open....
