Antique Tortoise Shell Knotting Shuttle * Circa 1800
This antique knotting shuttle is carved from beautifully patterned natural tortoiseshell. It was used for making a knotted trim popular with French and English ladies between 1750 and 1800. It's held together with brass rivets and measures 3 1/2" long by 1" wide. It has some surface wear, but the overall condition is excellent with no chips and cracks. It is sturdy with no wobble and intact, rounded tips and was bought in England....

This early antique tape measure is carved of ivory and has a nice old patina. The silk tape is unmarked and the top turns to rewind the tape. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage and the natural ivory grain is lovely. It measures 1 1/8" high and the top is 1" in diameter....

This nice little box is carved from real ivory. The top is turned with concentric circles. It's in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. It has a nice ivory grain and measures 1 1/8" in diameter and 1 3/8" high. It screws together securely but the top is slightly warped and it takes a second to get the threads aligned. Inside is a carved ivory thimble with a geometric design on the band. It's also in excellent condition, in round with no holes or cracks and is about an American size 9....

This ornate needle case is carved of ivory with beautiful detail and it has a lovely old patina and grain pattern. It's decorated with birds and butterflies on a cloud background. The top is in the form of a sunflower. It was carved in China in the early 19th century for an English workbox. The condition is excellent with no chips or other damage and it screws together perfectly. It measures 2 5/8" long. This style of needle case is shown on p. 84 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

This beautifully shaped French case is carved from a solid piece of real ivory with precise spaces for each tool. The tools include a pair of scissors, stiletto, needle case, bodkin and a thimble. The tools are all gilded silver and have the French boar's head hallmarks for 800/1000 pure silver made in Paris. They have delicate engraved scrolling designs. The scissors have tight blades, sharp points and cut very well. They are 3 1/2" long. The thimble is in excellent condition, crisp and in round with no holes or other damage and is about an American size 6-7 (14.2 mm diameter opening). Antique Figural Ivory Fretwork Urn Pin Cushion * C1800
This lacy disc style pin cushion is carved of ivory in the form of a little vase or urn on a pedestal. Both sides have a pierced design and it has a lovely old patina and ivory grain pattern. A silk ribbon forms the cushion around the sides and it is intact and original. It dates to the early 19th century and measures 1 1/2" wide by 1 1/2" high. Some pincushions in this style are shown on p. 143 of Gay Ann Rogers' book "The Illustrated History of Needlework Tools"....
