Antique Carved Ivory Madras Work Vinaigrette * C1820
This little round antique ivory vinaigrette was used by 19th century ladies to carry perfume or smelling salts. The top is engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It has a lovely mellow patina and distinctive ivory grain pattern. It contains a pierced inner disk which unscrews so that a piece of saturated wool or cotton could be inserted. It still contains a little ball of sheep wool. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and the lacquer designs are pretty much intact. It measures slightly over 3/4" in diam...

This wonderful and very rare antique cribbage board is carved of ivory and engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles on one side. It's a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It has a lovely mellow patina and grain pattern. The four feet each contain a playing peg which unscrews from the top. The condition is excellent with no loss or damage and the lacquer designs are unusually intact. This unusual letter opener is hand carved of ivory and has a nice old patina and grain pattern. The handle has been engraved with fine Madras work circles and dots. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. There is a fine age crack where the blade is riveted to the handle but the overall condition is excellent and sturdy with no other damage. It measures 7 1/8" long. This nice little piece is carved of ivory and has a beautiful old patina and ivory grain pattern. One side is engraved with the circle and dot designs known as Madras work. It's a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. The back has the script word "Emery". Classic Antique Carved Ivory Tambour Crochet Hook * C1820
This antique tambour hook is hand turned and carved and has a beautiful old patina and ivory grain pattern. It has a steel collar and thumb screw and the top unscrews to reveal a storage compartment for holding the hooks (There are 2 small steel hooks). The condition is excellent with no chips or other damage. Everything screws together securely and the thumb screw tightens properly to hold the hook. It measures 5 1/2" long when closed. A similar ivory tambour hook is shown on p. 74 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

Antique Tortoise Shell Knotting / Tatting Shuttle * 1750-1800
This wonderful old knotting shuttle was used for making a knotted trim popular with French and English ladies between 1750 and 1800. It's carved from natural tortoise shell and held together with rivets. The post is matching shell. Both sides are inlaid with sterling silver in a lacy border pattern. The condition is excellent with no cracks, chips or loss of inlay. It does have one small surface insect nibble. It measures almost 5" long by 1 3/8" wide.
