Antique Scrimshawed Whale Ivory Sewing Kit * Souvenir of the Azores

Antique Scrimshawed Whale Ivory Sewing Kit * Souvenir of the Azores
This elegant sewing etui is carved of whale tooth ivory. The grain pattern is very distinctive. Sperm whaling was the primary industry of the Azores until the 20th century when it was finally abolished. The Scrimshaw Museum there presents a collection of whale and sperm whale teeth which have been sculptured by the skillful hands of the fishermen of the Island. The outside is engraved and scrimshawed with "Ste Maris, Açôres". This is Santa Maria Island in the Azores, a Portuguese territory. It unscrews and inside is a thread bobbin over a needle case with a thimble on top. The spool and needlecase are also whale ivory and the thimble i...

Antique Carved Bone Emery Cushion * English * Circa 1850

Antique Carved Bone Emery Cushion * English * Circa 1850
This nice little Victorian emery is carved of bone with a flower design on both sides and serrated edges. It has a red silk cushion (intact and original) and is stuffed with emery powder. There is a natural flaw in the center on one side, but the bone is in otherwise excellent condition with no cracks or other damage. It measures almost 1" in diameter. Gay Ann Rogers shows emeries of similar age and form in mother of pearl on p. 135 of her book "An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools". Emeries were used to sharpen and polish the steel needles of the age. Emery powder is a fine grit and the needles were pushed in and out the cushion ...

Antique Figural Brass Leaf Thimble Holder w/ Child's Ivory Thimble * C1890

Antique Figural Brass Leaf Thimble Holder w/ Child's Ivory Thimble * C1890
This figural thimble holder is adorable and I've never seen anything like it. A realistic oak leaf has been formed of gilded brass and the stem has a little ivory knob. A velvet thimble post is in the middle and sitting on that is a carved ivory thimble. The thimble is about an American child's size 4 (12.5 mm diameter opening). It is in perfect condition though the ivory has a couple of natural flaws. There is a darker line in the grain on the side and the top has the dark round mark that occurs at the center of the tusk. These are not damage. The leaf is also in great condition with no dents or damage and only a bit of rubbing. It meas...
