The elegant tools in this French necessaire are nestled into the precisely carved out interior of the lovely oval case, carved from a solid piece of real ivory. The matching pieces are all gilded silver and engraved with very fine textured designs. The set consists of scissors, needlecase, pencil, penknife/nail tool, bodkin and thimble. Everything fits the case perfectly and it's obvious they all belong there. The tools have the boar's head hallmarks used on Parisian silver from 1838. Vintage Carved Ivory Thimble by John von Hoelle * Set With Jade & Coral
This little thimble was hand carved of ivory by Jon von Hoelle. He says on p. 123 of his book that he had carved about 100 of these, all different. He shows some of them on pp.. The book was published in 1986 so that helps date this piece. The collection I'm selling it from bought 4 from him. This thimble has a wide pierced band and are set with red and green cabochons. (The note with them says they are jade and coral, but I have no way of checking that). It's about an American child's size 5 (13.5 mm diameter opening) and it measures 7/8" high. The condition is perfect with no chips, cracks or lost stones....

Antique Tortoise Shell & Sterling Silver Folding Fruit Knife * English * Circa 1800-10
The blade of this wonderful tortoise shell and silver fruit knife is hallmarked with a Sheffield sterling silver mark and the duty mark for King George III. The sides are inlaid with silver piqué dots in a running diamond design. The carved tortoise shell scales have lovely color and patina and are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or insect nibbles. The blade is intact and also in great condition with no bends. It closes well and dates to the early 19th century. The silver spring cover has a diagonal pattern and it measures 3 1/4" closed and 5 3/4" open....

Antique Ivory Madras Work Letter Opener * English * Circa 1820
This unusual letter opener is hand carved of ivory and has a nice old patina and grain pattern. The handle has been engraved with fine Madras work circles and dots. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. There is a fine age crack where the blade is riveted to the handle but the overall condition is excellent and sturdy with no other damage. It measures 7 1/8" long. A collection of sewing tools in Madras work are shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....
