Antique Ivory Cased Silver Gilt Sewing Etui * French * Circa 1890

Antique Ivory Cased Silver Gilt Sewing Etui * French * Circa 1890
The elegant tools in this French necessaire are nestled into the precisely carved out interior of the case, made from a solid piece of real ivory. The matching pieces are all gilded silver and engraved with the classical '4 penny spot' design. This is a more petite set than is usually seen and contains scissors, a needlecase and a thimble. The thimble has the boar's head hallmarks used on Parisian 800/1000 pure silver. The needle case is marked 830S for 830 pure silver. This indicates the set was made for export, probably to Germany or Scandinavia. The scissors (2 7/8" long) have tight blades, intact points and cut beautifully to the tip...

This style of stiletto was very popular in the early 19th century when delicate silk bags were used to store needlework projects and tools. The handle also serves as a sheath to protect the point. It unscrews, reverses, and then screws back into the handle for use. The ivory has turned carving and everything screws together well. It's in excellent condition with no chips, loss or other damage. It measures 2 5/8" long closed and 3 3/8" open and was bought in England. It has a very nice glossy patina....

Very Fine Antique Carved Ivory Canton Needle Case * C1830
This ornate needle case is carved with beautiful detail and it has a lovely old patina and grain pattern. It's decorated with Chinese figures and buildings on a ground of foliage and the quality of the carving on this one is way above the norm. The top is in the form of a sunflower. It was carved in China in the early 19th century as an export item for an English workbox. Aside from a chip in the base, the condition is excellent with no cracks or other damage and it screws together perfectly. It measures 3 3/8" long. This style of needlecase is shown on p. 84 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

Fab Antique Carved Ivory Madras Work Pin Cushion * C1820

Fab Antique Carved Ivory Madras Work Pin Cushion * C1820
This antique ivory pin cushion is engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles around both sides with a star like motif in the center. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It is carved of ivory and has an exceptional patina and ivory grain pattern. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and the lacquer designs are unusually intact, about the best I've ever seen. It has the original dark green silk cushion, also in great condition, and it's stuck with some very early coil headed, hand made steel pins. Extra silk ribbon has been used to create a loop ...

Ornate Antique Carved Ivory Tape Measure * English * Circa 1830

Ornate Antique Carved Ivory Tape Measure * English * Circa 1830
This gorgeous antique tape measure is hand carved of real ivory with beautiful carving from top to bottom. The top is carved in the form of a many petaled flower. The sides have delicate turning and the top and bottom have beaded edges. The green silk tape is original and complete and is marked in nails and partial yards. A "nail" represented 2 1/4" or 1/16th of a yard and was an early measuring system found on older English tape measures. Gay Ann Rogers has an explanation of this measuring system on p. 126 of her book An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools. The top turns to rewind the tape and it works perfectly. It is in excellent ...
