This delightful and complete sterling silver chatelaine has five chains with sewing and writing tools. The theme is animals and flowers. The plaques feature a variety of animals and flying angels and the chains have little squirrels, birds and flowers on alternating links. This piece is from the collection of Genevieve Cummins and is the actual chatelaine that is photographed on page 206 (colour plate 205) of the book she wrote with Nerylla Taunton "Chatelaines, Utility to Glorious Extravagance". The plaques, belt clip and tools all have the English sterling hallmarks for London 1892 and the maker's mark for Stuart Clifford (pencil marks are rubbed).

Attached to the chains are 5 sterling silver tools. There's a sterling scissors sheath with sterling handled scissors, a sterling thimble case and sterling thimble (hallmarks rubbed), a sterling pin cushion, a sterling aide memoir and a sterling sliding pencil. The little scissors are 3 1/4" long and are stamped "Sheffield". The blades are tight with intact points and they cut paper well.

All of the silver is in excellent condition with no dents or damage. The thimble does have one needle hole in the top but is otherwise nice. It is about an American size 7/8 (14.75 mm diameter opening). The thimble bucket, pincushion and scissors sheath have their original deep purple velvet lining. The pencil works well and the aide memoir has five ivory colored sheets. The waist plaque measures 2 3/4" wide and the chatelaine is 13 3/4" long from top to bottom. The postage shown includes Registered shipping for non US addresses and insured UPS Ground shipping within the US.
