This antique needle case was carved of real ivory in China for export to England in the early 19th century. It's decorated with birds, butterflies and a twinging dragon on a ground of clouds. The top and bottom are in the form of sunflowers.
Aside from a small hairline crack at the edge of the top, the condition is excellent with no chips or loss. It measures 3 7/8" long and has a nice old patina and ivory grain. Some sewing tools with this style of carving are shown on p. 84 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries".
