This wonderful needle or bodkin case was all hand carved by the famous ivory carvers of Dieppe, France in the late 18th or early 19th century. The top slides on and off. It is decorated with scrolling grape vines and bunches of grapes. The top and bottom have a flower design. The fineness and detail are outstanding and the patina and ivory grain are lovely.

The only damage is a deep chip in the sleeve under the top and tiny nicks at the top and bottom edges that have worn smooth with age. It measures 4 3/4" long and the top has little piqué studs around the bottom edge. Nerylla Taunton shows a variety of Dieppe carved sewing pieces on p. 80 of her book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries".
