The blade of this very rare and early tortoise shell fruit knife is solid silver (tests 800/1000 pure). The sides are inlaid with incredibly fine gold wire. The buttons at each rivet test solid 18 Kt gold and I'm sure the inlay is as well.
The carved tortoise shell scales have lovely patina and are in excellent condition with no damage save for couple of tiny edge insect nibbles. The blade is intact and also in great condition with no bends or nicks. It closes well and dates from the middle to the late 18th century. It measures 2 7/8" closed and 5 3/8" open and is French.
