This antique knotting shuttle is carved from beautifully patterned natural tortoise shell and was used for making a knotted trim popular with French and English ladies between 1750 and 1800. It's held together with brass rivets and the post is also tortoise. It measures 4 1/2" long by 1 1/4" wide.
Aside from some insect nibbled chips on both sides at one end, the condition is nice with no other damage. It is sturdy with no wobble and was bought in England. The glossy patina is gorgeous.
