This little tatting shuttle is carved of ivory and has been engraved on both sides with Madras work circles and dots. It is hand carved and has a glossy old patina and a nice grain pattern. It's English and dates to the early 19th century.
The condition is excellent with intact points and no chips, cracks or other damage. Brass rivets hold it together. It measures 2 7/8" by slightly over 1/2" and is sturdy with no wobble. A variety of Madras work needlework tools are shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries".
