[E810]

This lovely workbox is an outstanding example of the circa 1810 English Regency workboxes. It is carved of wood and covered with textured red leather. It has a beautifully molded & embossed top and sits on four brass lion's paw feet. Brass fruit baskets on each side hold ring handles and the brass key escutcheon on the front has the royal crown and the rose, thistle & shamrock emblems for the British empire. The interior is lined with pink paper and it's divided into several sections. The top has the original mirror. Inside there are a variety of sewing tools including in ivory, 7 thread barrels and a tape measure. The lift out leather tool pad has steel scissors with a sterling silver sheath as well as a sterling bodkin and sterling stiletto (all tested). A silver thimble sits in the silk thimble compartment. There's a built in silk pin cushion and a leather needle book in a slot beside that. It has the original key.

The tall sterling silver (tested) thimble has an applied scalloped lower band and an engraved top band. It is about an American size 8 (15 mm diameter opening). It has wear but is in nice condition with no holes or loss. The fancy steel scissors (3 5/8" long) have sharp points and cut well. All of the ivory barrels are in great condition with no chips, cracks or damage and they have spools inside. The tape measure has the original & complete silk tape marked in inches. It winds back in by turning the top and works well.

The leather on the box is in excellent condition with no tears or loss. The hinges are strong and all of the hardware and linings are original. It measures 8" by 5 1/4" by 4 1/4" high and the key works well. A similar leather workbox is shown on p. 44 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries". This is a superb and very rare set to find in this condition. It's been in my collection for 20 years but is looking for a new home. The postage shown includes Registered shipping for non US addresses and insured shipping within the US.
