This antique ivory piece is engraved with a zig zag pattern of Madras work dots and circles around the sides. It’s a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs.\u00a0It is from my collection of Madras sewing tools. <\/b><\/big>It was used for “pricking” bobbin lace patterns into parchment or for pricking through an embroidery pattern that would be rubbed over with colored chalk to transfer it to the fabric. The top screws on to cover the sharp point of the steel pricker.

The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and the lacquer designs are unusually intact. It measures 2 5\/8″ long and screws together perfectly. It’s English and dates to the early 19th century.
