This lovely tambour hook is carved of real ivory in an elegantly turned shape. It has been inlaid with tiny round steel spangles in a style that was popular at the beginning of the 19th century. I’ve seen many needle cases using this technique, but seldom a tambour hook. It has a gilded collar and steel thumb screw and the top unscrews to reveal a storage compartment for holding the hooks (There are 2 very fine steel hooks). The hook cover unscrews and then screws onto the top to lengthen the tool and prevent loss.
Aside from missing a few of the little steel discs (at the tip of the hook cover), it is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. Everything screws together well and the thumbscrew tightens properly on the hook. It has a lovely old patina and measures 4 1/2″ long when closed. A similar one with the spangles is shown on p. 193 of Gay Ann Rogers’ book “An Illustrated History of Needlework Tools”.
