Ornate Antique Sheathed Ivory Stiletto / Awl * English * Circa 1820

This style of stiletto was very popular in the early 19th century when delicate silk bags were used to store needlework projects and tools.  The handle also serves as a sheath to protect the point. It unscrews, reverses, and then screws back into the handle for use.

This one is very substantial and has an unusual steel point inside, rather than ivory. That makes it more practical and good for heavier jobs. The ivory handle is beautifully carved with a variety of beaded and petal designs and everything screws together perfectly. It’s in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. It measures 3 1/8″ closed and 4 3/4″ open and was bought in England.
