This little antique piece is carved of real ivory with the center stained to create a reverse image of various flora. I can make out a thistle, tulip, berries and a variety of leaves. This style is generally called Tyrolean or Black Forest work, though it was probably made in Switzerland. The handle also serves as a sheath to protect the point. It unscrews, reverses, and then screws back into the handle for use.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss and everything screws together well. The point is nice and sharp and it measures 2 5/8″ long closed and 3 3/8″ long open. This would have been sold as a souvenir item in the late 19th century.
