This gorgeous ivory needle case is rimmed with engraved bands of solid 18 Kt gold (tested). One band has the tiny French gold hallmark, but it’s not clear. The top is engraved around the sides with a calendar. The top band of ivory moves around when the top gold band is unscrewed. This allows the day of the week to line up with the calendar dates for the current month.
The condition is amazing, absolutely perfect, and the ivory has a lovely mellow patina and grain pattern. The initials for the days of the week are in French, L (Lundi) for Monday M (Mardi) for Tuesday, etc. It measures 3 3/4″ long and everything screws together perfectly. It dates to the very early 19th century. An ivory Madras work needle case / perpetual calendar is shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton’s book “Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries”.
