Antique Figural Ivory Fretwork Lyre Pin Cushion * English * Circa 1820

This lacy disc style pin cushion is carved of ivory in the form of a lyre. Both sides have a fancy pierced design and it has a lovely old patina and ivory grain pattern. The rose colored underlining shows through the carving and a rose silk ribbon forms the cushion around the sides. The cushion is original and intact. The top on one side has a hairline crack, but it’s faint and held solidly together by the stitching & cushion. The condition of the ivory is otherwise excellent with no chips or loss.

It dates to the early 19th century and measures 1 3/4″ by 1 1/8″. Some pincushions in this style are shown on p. 143 of Gay Ann Rogers’ book “The Illustrated History of Needlework Tools”.
