The blade of this rare and early tortoise shell knife is steel. One side is inlaid with a rectangular gold cartouche. That and the gold bolster both test solid 15 K gold.
The tortoise shell scales have a lovely patina and are in almost perfect condition. The back side has a hairline crack through one of the rivets, but it’s very difficult to see. The blade is sharp and intact and also in great condition. It has some discoloration but no rust, pitting or nicks. It opens and closes with perfect tension. It measures 2 7/8″ closed and 5 1/4″ open.
