This very rare antique silk winder is made of beautifully patterned tortoise shell and is from my collection. It was made in Canton for export to England in the early 19th century. It’s a large one in the form of an 8 pointed star. The carved monogram (AG) on one side indicates it was a special order taken to the Chinese craftsmen by the sea captain. The other side is engraved with a floral design. It measures 2 5/8″ in diameter and the condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage.
