Antique Carved & Stained Ivory Needle Threader * Circa 1870

This antique needle threader is nicely carved of real ivory and stained a pretty shade of aqua blue. There are 2 metal plates on one side that are stamped "Mappin Webb & Co. Sheffield". One end is marked for size 4 to 8 needles and the other end is for size 8 to 12. The needle is put in (eye end down) through the hole at the appropriate end. The thread is pushed through the funnel shaped hole on the non metal side (into the eye) and it really works.
It measures 3 1/4" long and has lovely ivory grain and patina. It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. Molly Proctor shows a couple of these and how they were used...

It's 1" in depth and 7/8" wide. This style of clamp was made for English export and was probably part of a workbox in the early 19th century, perhaps a child's box. One is shown on p. 84 of Nery...
