Antique English Sheathed Ivory Stiletto / Awl * C1820
This style of stiletto was very popular in the early 19th century when delicate silk bags were used to store needlework projects and tools. The handle also serves as a sheath to protect the point. It unscrews, reverses, and then screws back into the handle for use. The ivory has turned carving and everything screws together perfectly. It's in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. It measures 2 1/4" closed and 3 5/8" open and was bought in England. It has a very nice ivory grain pattern....

Both of these elegant glove stretchers are carved of solid ivory. They are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. They measure 7" and 8 7/8" long and the springs work perfectly. These were used to stretch out the fingers of a lady's kid gloves after washing....

This little tatting shuttle has been engraved on both sides with fine Madras work circles and dots. It is carved of ivory and has a glossy old patina and a nice grain pattern. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. The condition is excellent with intact points and no chips, cracks or other damage. Brass rivets hold it together. It measures 2 3/8" long by 5/8" wide and is sturdy with no wobble. A variety of ivory Madras work needlework tools are shown on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

This antique ivory needle case is engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles around the sides. It's a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It is carved of ivory and has a lovely patina and ivory grain pattern. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and the lacquer designs are unusually intact. It measures 3" long and screws together perfectly. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. A variety of Madras work needlework tools are shown in this material on p. 87 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries"....

Antique Carved Ivory Madras Work Vinaigrette * C1820
This little round antique ivory vinaigrette was used by 19th century ladies to carry perfume or smelling salts. The top is engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles. This is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It has a lovely mellow patina and distinctive ivory grain pattern. It contains a pierced inner disk which unscrews so that a piece of saturated wool or cotton could be inserted. It still contains a little ball of sheep wool. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage and the lacquer designs are pretty much intact. It measures slightly over 3/4" in diam...
