Antique Painted Ivory Needle Book/ Pincushion * Circa 1820

Antique Painted Ivory Needle Book/ Pincushion * Circa 1820
This antique ivory combination pin cushion and needle book is handpainted with golden acorns on the back and front covers. It opens like a book and inside are two little pages of finely woven wool to hold the needles (original). Around the sides is a disc style pin cushion stuck with a few tiny hand made steel pins. Pale blue silk ribbons trim the pincushion, the back spine and the ribbons to hold it closed (all original). The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or loss. Antique Carved Ivory Workbox Thread Barrel * Circa 1820
This slim antique cotton or thread barrel has a beautiful old patina and grain pattern. It is hand carved with smooth sides and turned bands. The top unscrews from the barrel and inside is a little spool which was to be wrapped with thread. There's a hole in the side to feed the thread through and the knob on top winds in the thread. Antique Carved Ivory Pin Cushion / Disc * Circa 1820

Antique Carved Ivory Pin Cushion / Disc * Circa 1820
This antique carved ivory piece is a pin cushion in disc form. This allowed the pins to be pushed flush into the sides so it wouldn't snag other items in the work bag. The cushion around the sides is silk and is stuck with some old hand made steel pins. Both sides are carved with concentric circles and black scrimshaw style inking accentuates the center and border. The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. The silk cushion is intact and original. It measures 1 1/8" in diameter and has a silk wrist loop on top. Rare Antique Silver Corset Vesta or Match Safe * Circa 1890

Rare Antique Silver Corset Vesta or Match Safe * Circa 1890
This antique silver plated vesta is in the form of a lady's corset, a bit risqué for the time. The top is hinged and it opens and snaps closes solidly. The striker is at the bottom. The condition is excellent with no dents or other damage and measures 1 5/8" high by 1 3/8" wide. The silver plating is rubbed at the hinge and it looks like it was plated over copper or brass. The side has a ring so it could be attached to a chatelaine or watch chain. The top has faint engraving "L. Turner" but it was hard to photograph. It was bought in England. One like this is shown on p. 90 of Eugene & Christine Sanders' book Pocket Matchsafes and they ...
