Ornate Antique Carved Ivory Needle Case * Circa1820

This gorgeous needle case is deeply carved of real ivory with a variety of designs. The condition is excellent with no chips or other damage and it screws together perfectly.
It has a lovely old patina and ivory grain pattern and measures 3 3/4" long. It was made in India for English export in the early 19th century. Similar ones are shown on p. 88 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries....

Antique Ivory Perpetual Calendar Needle Case * C1820

This nice little Madras work antique piece is engraved with with a perpetual calendar above the base. The decoration is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It's carved of real ivory and has a lovely mellow patina and ivory grain. The bottom unscrews and a ring with the days of the week revolves so the calendar can be set.
The condition is excellent with no chips or cracks. It measures 2 5/8" long. The top is a bit tight when screwing down all the way. It's English and dates to the early 19th century. A variety of Madras work needlework tools (including one with a perpetual calendar) are shown...

Antique Carved Ivory Double Ended Emery * Circa 1840

This lovely double ended emery has a wide beautifully carved ivory band around the center. A beaded design is in the center with fluted, scalloped edges. It has dark violet velvet cushions which are in good condition.
The condition is excellent with no chips, cracks or other damage. It measures 1 3/4" long and has a nice old patina....

Antique Carved Ivory Pin Cushion / Disc * Circa 1840

Both sides of this exceptionally high quality wheel style pincushion have been carved with very fine zig zags in concentric circles. It has thick, scalloped edges. It is carved of real ivory and has a gorgeous grain pattern and patina. One side has a crack along the edge that has been repaired. The condition is otherwise outstanding and there are no chips or loss. The pale blue silk cushion is in nice, intact condition, though not original. It measures 2 1/4" in diameter and came from England.
This style of pincushion allowed the pins to be stuck flush into the velvet around the cushion's edges so it could be carried in the silk work bag...

Antique Mother of Pearl Disc Style Pin Cushion * Circa 1870

This luminous disc style pin cushion has engraved plates of mother of pearl on both sides. It is unusual in shape and style with delicate floral designs carved on both sides. This type of pincushion allowed the pins to be stuck in the silk "sandwich" around the cushion's edges so that it could be dropped in a work bag.
The mother of pearl is in excellent condition with no chips or other damage. The pale blue silk cushion is original and complete (though with some tiny pin holes). It measures 1 7/8" by 1 1/4"....

Antique Ivory Madras Work Needle Book / Pin Cushion * C1820

This lovely antique piece combines the functions of a needle book and a pin cushion. It is made of real ivory and engraved with patterns of Madras work dots and circles on both sides. There is also a center ivory panel with engraving. Madras is a form of scrimshaw work where black lacquer is flowed into the engraved designs. It has a lovely mellow patina and grain pattern. It opens like a book and 4 wool flannel pages hold needles. The other side is a stuffed box style pincushion. All of the linings and silk are original.
