This nice little set is in a case lined with the original emerald green satin and velvet. The fitted interior contains a sterling silver crochet hook, scissors, stiletto and thimble. The crochet hook and stiletto have English sterling hallmarks for Birmingham 1900. The thimble and scissors have Birmingham 1901 hallmarks. Thimble maker James Swann has his mark on the thimble and the other pieces are by Adie & Lovekin. Most English silversmiths didn't have the machinery to make thimbles and bought them from someone like Swann for their sewing boxes. This wonderful little porcelain needle case is decorated all over with tiny hand painted floral sprays. It is mounted over gilded sterling silver (tested). It is in 3 sections, the top, a container for needles and one for pins. The background is white and delicate gold designs border each section. Raised blue enamel 'jewels' decorate each gold border. This was a technique practiced by the Worcester company so it may be theirs. Nine detailed sprays featuring roses and other flowers encircle the sections. This wonderful old set is French and came from an area of Paris called the Palais Royal. The classically styled box is beautifully grained burlwood with an inlaid mother of pearl key escutcheon. Inside is a lift out tray fitted for the needlework tools. It is lined in the original silk velvet in an unusual pale blue color scheme.
