Antique French Silver Mistletoe Needle Case * C1890

Antique French Silver Mistletoe Needle Case * C1890
This little antique silver plated needle case is embossed on both sides with a flowing Art Nouveau mistletoe design. There is a small hole on the side but not placed so that needles could escape. I think this happened during manufacture rather than from damage. The condition is otherwise excellent with no dents and no loss of its silver plating. It measures 2 5/8" long and was bought in France. Nerylla Taunton shows a set with this pattern on p. 136 of her book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries....

This pretty antique awl has a silver plated handle embossed on both sides with a flowing Art Nouveau mistletoe design. It's in excellent condition with no dents and the silver plating is intact. It has a turned steel shank and measures almost 3 3/8" long. It was probably once part of a set of French needlework tools. Stilettos had a variety of uses including unpicking stitches and creating eyelet holes in fabric that were then embroidered around in a technique called Broderie Anglais. They were also used to transfer design outlines to fabric, pricking paper patterns along the lines and then rubbing them with a pounce pad or colored chalk p...
