This beautifully made antique combination piece is smoothly carved of ivory and has a lovely old patina and grain pattern. It unfolds into a 6" ruler and has a slide out pencil in one end and a fold out penknife in the other. The hinge mechanisms and rivets are brass. All of the scales and numbering are etched into the surface (on both sides) and stained like scrimshaw. It is marked in inches.

A button on one side pushes out a mechanical pencil. It works properly and twists out the lead for use. It uses a 1.4 mm lead. The steel penknife folds out for use and is sharp and intact with no rust or damage. The ivory has some surface hairline age cracks on the sides, but nothing serious. The condition is otherwise excellent and the etching is sharp and clear. Folded up it measures 3 1/8" x 1/2" and it was found in an English sewing workbox. This piece is shown on p. 133 of Deborah Crosby's book "Victorian Pencils, Tools to Jewels".
