This little antique needle book was is carved of real ivory and is lined with red silk. It's carved and decorated on both sides with delicate pierced designs showing a tree and a bird with a house in the background. Inside are 4 finely twilled wool flannel "pages" for the needles.
Aside from a small edge crack on the back, the condition is excellent with no chips or loss and it looks to be all original. The wool pages don't even have moth holes, and they still have a couple very fine needles. It dates to the early 19th century and measures 2 3/4" by 1 3/4" closed. Similar sewing tools in this style are shown on p. 86 of Nerylla Taunton's book "Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries".
