This elegant case is carved from a solid piece of real ivory with precise spaces for each tool. These were made in France but are sometime found with English or mixed tools as several English retailers had them custom made for their stores. The tools include two pairs of scissors, a penknife, stiletto, button hook and a silver thimble and propelling pencil. Little engraved toggles turn to hold each of the tools in place. The scissors have scrolling shanks and are English. The pencil tests sterling silver and is English. It has a citrine seal at the top and works well, turning to propel the lead out for use.

The scissors have tight blades, sharp points and cut very well. They are 4 1/2" and 3 1/2" long. The thimble has the boar's head hallmarks used on Parisian silver from 1838. It's in excellent condition with no holes or other damage and is about an American size 9 (16 mm diameter opening). The penknife has a sharp, intact blade. The button hook and one pair of the scissors aren't original, but they fit the spaces.

The ivory case is in excellent condition with no chips or damage and has a lovely old patina and ivory grain. The top has a monogram, an intertwined M E & T. The hinge is strong and the push button mechanism works perfectly. It measures 4 5/8" by 2 3/8".
