This wonderful antique etui is solid sterling silver (tested) and the sides are deeply embossed with Rococo scrolls bordering all sorts of wonderful scenes and figures. It measures 3 1/2" high, 1 7/8" wide at the top and about 5/8" deep. The top is hinged and a silver button on the side opens it and works well. The top has a French sentiment having to do with love and friendship united and burning with a fire. The etui is English, however, as evidenced by the high grade of silver, the ruler marked in inches, the scissors style and the lack of hallmarks.

Inside it has a complete set of the original silver and steel tools. Included are a pair of scissors, a combination pencil/dip pen, a tiny spoon, a folding ruler, a caliper, a needle case, a folding ivory colored note page and a steel corkscrew, knife and fork. The last 3 items screw into the bottom of the needle case. This case has another silver case inside (missing the top) which also becomes a handle for the screw in steel tools.

The steel scissors have solid silver bows (tested) and are 3" long. They have tight blades with sharp points and they cut paper well. The pen/pencil, spoon, ruler, needlecase and calipers are all solid sterling silver (tested). Some of the steel is pitted but all of the pieces are in nice working condition with no dents or damage. The condition of the case is also outstanding with no dents, repairs or other damage. It's rare to find one of these with all of the original tools in such good condition. A couple of silver etuis in this style are shown in plate 88 of Sylvia Groves' book The History of Needlework Tools and Accessories.
