This pretty sterling (tested) pincushion basket is about 180 years old and in outstanding condition. It is embossed and chased around the sides with flowers and scrolling designs. It has a twisted silver, movable handle. It was made in Birmingham, England in the early 19th century by Joseph Taylor, a prominent silversmith of that era. He was well known for sets of silver tools that included a basket pincushion.
The silver is in excellent condition with no dents, repairs or other damage. The velvet cushion is original and intact but the nap is rubbed. It measures almost 1 1/8" wide x 1 1/2" high (with the handle up). Some sets by Taylor with basket pincushions are shown on pp. 128-129 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools and Embroideries and one is on p. 65 of Bridget McConnel's book The Story of Antique Needlework Tools.
