A lucet was a tool for making a braided cord that could be used for trim or lacing. This one is carved of real ivory. It's in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or other damage. The patina and ivory grain are lovely. It dates to the late 18th century and measures 3 3/8" tall by 1 3/4" wide. Instructions for using one (and some pictures) are shown on pp.72-73 of Nerylla Taunton's book Antique Needlework Tools.
