This little antique book is made of real ivory with a deeply carved bouquet of flowers on the front. I can make out roses, pansies, forget me nots, lily of the valley and a tulip, all tied with a ribbon bow. The back is smooth. Inside it is lined with the original red silk and it contains two wool needle pages, a pocket for needle packets and a fold out leather and silk thread holder with two channels. There are leather loops at the edge and an ivory stiletto slips into those to hold the book closed. The carving is exquisite and was carved by the talented ivory carvers in Dieppe, France.
The back cover has a tiny chip at the bottom and there's an ink stain on the interior silk lining. The condition is otherwise excellent with no other damage and the carving is perfect. The back spine is leather. It dates to the early 19th century and measures 2" by 2 7/8" closed.
